With a mission to raise funds and awareness for endangered orangutans in Borneo, Orangutan Appeal UK needed a website that could effectively communicate their message and drive donations and orangutan adoptions.
Orangutan Appeal UK, a charity dedicated to orangutan conservation, was facing a critical challenge.
With a convoluted checkout process and an outdated design, their existing website had become ineffective in conveying their mission to a wider audience, and was failing to inspire trust or confidence.
How we helped
We redesigned and rebuilt the Orangutan Appeal UK website, optimising the site’s ecommerce checkout processes, and rationalising the complex basket logic to make it easier for visitors to complete the adoption process.

We aimed to create an online platform that would not only reflect Orangutan Appeal’s deep commitment to orangutan conservation but also engage and inspire a broader audience. We understood that the website needed to be more than just a donation portal; it had to tell a compelling story about the organisation’s mission, highlight the urgency of orangutan conservation, and facilitate meaningful contributions. Our goal was to design an intuitive and visually appealing website that could effectively communicate their message and drive donations and orangutan adoptions.
Research and analysis
We undertook keyword research and a UX analysis of competitors. This process uncovered a wealth of information which informed both the adoption journey and the site architecture. As a result of the keyword research, we recommended a new ‘educational resources’ area, where the client could write articles in response to a number of highly searched terms.
We collaborated with the client to map the adoption flow scenarios. Their product knowledge and our UX experience came together to produce a simple solution that covers a range of adoption types.
Design and development
The website was developed using Craft Commerce, which allowed us the flexibility to create a bespoke checkout process, with our usual focus on performance and accessibility compliance.
Orangutan Appeal’s team were empowered with a flexible set of tools to create their own content, which was a true test of Craft’s excellent author experience and editorial workflows. Craft’s matrix was successfully used to create some stunning pages, using block styles established in the design phase, alongside their excellent photography and poignant content.
